KREBS Hydrocyclones for Fiberglass Applications

Krebs Cyclones have been used to remove glass shot from rock wool fibers and glass fibers. The shot is beads of rock or glass that form when the fibers are being spun. By removing the shot, the quality of the fiber material is improved. Typical cyclone sizes that are used in this application range from 10” to 26” diameter. Krebs offers units that are lined with replaceable elastomers or ceramic. The choice of the lining material is dependent on the budget constraints and the customers preferred life of the unit.

Quite often multiple units are manifolded together in parallel. Using smaller diameter units produces a finer separation but more units are required to handle the large flow rates.

Units with a continuous underflow discharge or units with an accumulator tank are available. The continuous discharge is typically used if the shot loading is relatively high. These cyclones can be set up in a two or three stage counter current operation to maximize the recovery of fiber. The units with accumulator tanks are typically used if the amount of shot is relatively low. The shot accumulates in the accumulator tank and is discharged periodically. By having a closed underflow the fiber is forced to the overflow and fiber losses are very low. The discharge of the accumulator can be automatically set up on a timed basis.

Krebs cyclones are a highly efficient cost effective device for removing mill scale from quench water in metal forming plants such as steel, aluminum, brass and copper mills.

Krebs Cyclones that are typically used for mill scale removal are typically effective down to 400 mesh (37 microns).

Finer separations are possible with multiple numbers of small diameter cyclones.

Are you looking for a big bowl centrifuge capable of handling 600 gallons per minute (GPM). Elgin’s ESS-2272HD2 is fitted with a NEMA Premium, continuous duty, energy-efficient, 150 HP main drive and a direct-coupled 60 HP back-drive. The 150 HP main drive can operate the centrifuge up to 3,000 rpm’s, therefore generating more than 2,750 G’s of force.

Combined with Elgin’s proprietary control technology, the ESS-2272HD2 centrifuge outperforms the competition with a 48:1 three-stage planetary gearbox generates an industry-leading speed differential and 70,806 in-lbs (8,000 Nm) of torque, which ultimately translates into a larger performance window.

A decanter centrifuge (also known as solid bowl centrifuge) separates continuously solid materials from liquids in various types of slurry material.  Used to separate a mixture that consists of two substances with different densities by using the centrifugal force resulting from continuous rotation. It is normally used to separate solid-liquid, and liquid-liquid mixtures.

The ESS-1967HD2™ decanter centrifuge rotating assembly is machined from stainless steel in a “split-bowl” configuration.  By using a split-bowl, the solids end, which experiences the greatest level of wear, can be replaced without requiring replacement of the entire rotating assembly.  To protect the upper cover from the radial discharge of solids, a 180 degree radial, protective deflector plate has been installed. This deflector plate is easily replaced and eliminates the potential of the top cover being eroded by solids discharge.

Whether you are working toward maximizing product recovery or looking to get the most out of your “zero-discharge” closed-loop system, Elgin’s field proven ESS-1450HD2™ decanter centrifuge is the perfect choice.

A decanter centrifuge, also known as a horizontal bowl centrifuge, solid bowl centrifuge or scroll centrifuge, is a machine used to separate a solid material from a liquid(s) using a high-speed and continual rotational process. Due to centrifugal force, the heavier particles are pushed through the liquid and collected on the inner wall of the bowl; the high-speed rotation of the bowl separates the solids and liquid materials.

Elgin’s ESS-1450HD2™ decanter centrifuge is fitted with a NEMA premium, continuous duty, poly-chain driven, 50 hp main drive.  The 50 hp main drive can operate the centrifuge up to a maximum rotational speed of 3,250 rpm, thus, generating more than 2,100 G’s of force.  By using an adjustable motor mount, motor and belt maintenance is made easy by the adjustment of two jack screws.  No additional motor mounts, brackets, or tensioning devices are required. 

By utilizing a carbon fiber poly-chain, no belt retensioning is required after installation is complete.  The carbon fiber tensile cords are length-stable and can withstand shock loads that frequently lead to belt failure. More importantly, Elgin’s carbon fiber poly-chain will not require quarterly replacement, saving thousands in annual maintenance expenses.  Elgin’s ESS-1450HD2™ decanter centrifuge can be fitted with either a 52:1 or a 125:1 planetary gear box.  

The stainless steel rotating assembly is 14” (356 mm) in diameter and 49.5” (1,257 mm) in length.  By using a length over diameter ratio of 3.5, Elgin achieves an extremely stable centrifuge, even at maximum rotational speed. The rotating assembly is given further stability by the use of two SKF™ premium bearings.  Both bearings are installed in precision-machined pillow blocks. Equipped with externally accessible grease ports, daily greasing can be performed without the removal of machine guards. The internal flights are lined with tungsten carbide tiles along the entire length of both the clarification and the tapered section, extending the ESS-1450HD2™ decanter centrifuge’s ability to manage erosive solids.

The ESS-936HD2 decanter centrifuge is designed for low volume separation performance. The slim-line design is ideal for placement in small spaces to meet operational needs. Profile Wire Screens

All Elgin profiles are cold shaped to exacting tolerances for width, height, relief, hardness and tensile. Nothing less than Elgin's rigid standards are acceptable during the shaping process.

Advantages
Unlike punch plate or woven wire, profile wire screens offer 2-point particle contact. The continual slots and inward widening openings allow for less plugging of near size particles.

Construction
To ensure the strongest weld possible, Elgin utilizes continuously controlled TIG welding to connect the profile wires to the support bars.

Support Bars
Size, shape and spacing of the support bars depends on the application and loading conditions the screen will be subjected to. Round, square, triangular or rectangular are common.
